San Mateo, CA, Sept. 8, 2025 – The San Mateo Union High School District (SMUHSD) is proud to announce the completion of new facilities at Burlingame High School and San Mateo High School. These projects, funded by the Measure L General Obligation Bond passed by voters in 2020, represent a significant investment in student athletics, health and community well-being across the District. Both facilities were designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA), with BHM Construction serving as contractor for Burlingame High School and Lathrop Construction for San Mateo High School.

“The completion of these projects is a critical milestone for our District, as these new facilities directly address the growing participation in our athletics programs and provide essential modern, expanded spaces for both our students and the broader community,” stated Yancy Hawkins, SMUHSD Associate Superintendent and Chief Business Officer. “We are grateful to the voters whose support for Measure L made these vital enhancements possible.”

The new, 37,492 sq. ft. Burlingame High School Gymnasium replaces an outdated facility, providing a complex that includes two gyms—a main and second-story auxiliary gym space—equipped with locker rooms, physical education offices, a wrestling facility, lobby, storage and support spaces. The project expands the school’s capacity to accommodate the increase in participation for a number of indoor athletics teams and sporting events.

Simultaneously, the new 20,085 sq.ft. Athletic Training Complex at San Mateo High School accounts for the high demand for athletics space, bringing the school into greater uniformity with other District facilities. The facility features a gym, team and training rooms, a classroom, restrooms and additional support spaces, with seating for 820 spectators.

“We are proud to have partnered with the San Mateo Union High School District to bring these two gymnasiums to life, creating dynamic spaces that will serve students and enhance the schools’ athletics programs for many years,” said John Dybczak, principal at QKA. “Designing facilities that meet the evolving needs of students and communities is at the core of what we do.”

Both projects incorporate numerous green features, demonstrating the District’s commitment to sustainability. These include rooftop solar arrays, cool roof roofing systems, energy efficient mechanical systems, LED lighting systems and automatic lighting controls, low flow plumbing fixtures, drought tolerant landscaping with bioretention areas, and bicycle parking.

SMUHSD’s new gymnasiums are now open to students for the 2025-26 school year.
