ALAMEDA, Calif. (August 12, 2026) – Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) recently celebrated the completion of a major redevelopment and new construction project at Wood Middle School. Designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) and built by Lathrop Construction Associates, the project replaces aging, outdated facilities with a modern campus designed to better serve the district’s students and the surrounding community.
“We are thrilled to welcome students back for this upcoming school year to nearly all new facilities at Wood Middle School, realizing a long-planned investment in our students’ learning environment,” said AUSD Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. “Rethinking our campus layout allowed us to not only build superior academic spaces but also enhance safety, accessibility, and aesthetics for both our families and neighbors.”
Funded by Measure B, the $298 million facilities bond approved by voters in 2022, this significant modernization project included the removal of three portable buildings and three relocatable buildings, as well as the demolition of an aging three-story classroom building. In their place, the campus now features a new administration and media center, a gymnasium, and a new two-story classroom building, totaling 48,000 square feet of new construction. The design also incorporates significant site improvements, including new landscaping, courtyards, a shade structure, and a solar PV canopy.
“This project showcases how collaboration and strategic analysis lead to successful design,” noted Joel Williams, studio director at QKA. “By thoughtfully incorporating both new construction and modernization, we were able to design a campus that functions more efficiently and better serves students and faculty.”
Rather than modernizing the original outdated three-story structure—which the project team determined was structurally limiting—the choice to rebuild allowed for a complete layout reimagining. Replacing the building enabled the creation of a new campus driveway connecting Otis Drive and Grand Street, improving pick-up and drop-off safety. This design also features a parking lot with more than 70 spaces, including accessible and electric vehicle parking, which relieves local street parking pressures around the neighboring city park. Due to close coordination with the City of Alameda, the project also integrated the bikeway improvements along Grand Street and significantly improved the site frontage along that street.
With environmental sustainability serving as a core design priority, the school features key green upgrades, such as rooftop solar PV canopies and advanced stormwater management systems.
AUSD has used revenue from the Measure B facilities bond to also fund a new athletic field and gymnasium for Encinal Jr. & Sr. High School; a new swim center for Alameda High School; upgrades to Kofman auditorium; and a new campus for Otis Elementary School.
