Master Planning for Three High Schools
West Sonoma County Union High School District
Sebastopol and Forestville, Calif.
- Number of Schools: 3
- Completion Date: December 2011
West Sonoma County Union High School District (WSCUHSD) serves a large rural and suburban geographical area and houses two comprehensive high schools as well as an alternative high school.
Following the success of a $25M construction and capital improvement bond, the District retained QKA to prepare a thorough and forward-thinking Facilities Master Plan (FMP) to determine how best to allocate the bond. Workshops were held at each campus to determine specific facility needs and a comprehensive study assessed the current condition of the existing facilities, while identifying additions and expansions to support the educational curriculum and student life.
One of the primary goals of the FMP was to pair the bond funds and available rebate funds from the California Solar Initiative to install a new photovoltaic electrical generation system at each campus, allowing WSCUHSD to gain much needed general fund relief in the form of reduced energy bills that could be redirected towards educational programs and retaining faculty. The expansion plans also addressed the need to improve the physical education and athletic and arts environments throughout the District.
