The St. Helena Elementary School renovation began as a mechanical/ electrical repair project. During construction a fire devastated the original 1930’s theater and classroom building. The east wing was burned beyond repair while the theater, administration and west classrooms suffered smoke damage.

The theater underwent significant alterations as a result of the fire. The original balcony had been walled off in the 1978 renovation. The new balcony includes new stairs, fixed seats on risers and wrought iron balcony rails. The original house fixed seating, detailed proscenium and coffered ceiling were restored. New house and stage lighting and sound systems were installed. The lobby was renovated with new lighting, floor tile, wood trim and paint.

The restoration included the removal of a 1970’s heating system that lowered the classroom ceilings and covered windows. Restored tall windows, wood trim and cabinetry was installed.
