major seismic repair & modernization,

classroom clusters

Closed for a decade, the Sunset Ridge Elementary School was severely damaged including collapsed roof, dry rot, structural damage, mold, and water infiltration. The brick building’s mechanical and electrical systems were unusable and all interior finishes were severely damaged. Realizing the need for a neighborhood school, the District decided to reopen and enlarge the previously abandoned school.

The original open plan pod configuration forced students through the centrally located and undersized multi-use room. The new plan converted this space to a new library/ media center surrounded by windows into new corridors. A new multi-use room was provided between the modernized building and the new wing of classrooms. The remainder of the campus was structurally upgraded and significantly modernized.
