REDWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
Tamalpais Union High School District
1,440 students; 225,000 sf
From 2004 through 2006, the 225,000 square foot Redwood High School underwent its first comprehensive modernization in forty years. The necessary work included structural upgrades, hazardous material removal, new mechanical and plumbing systems, new lighting, accessibility upgrades, and extensive additions to the technological capacity of the teaching spaces. In addition to these infrastructure upgrades, the school also underwent a subtle facelift.
The grim main classroom block was often referred to by its users as prison-like, for good reason: The school’s two-story concrete square donut had no articulation; small punched openings, and was either dim or full of harsh glare in the classrooms. These conditions were economically mitigated by a bright new palette of colors and the addition of simple perforated sunscreens which provided both light control and exterior shape and shadow.
The only added space at Redwood HS was a new Theatre lobby. This was strategically placed at the most visible forefront of the school, and now provides a dramatic and inviting marquee and entrance to not only the Theatre, but to the campus as a whole.
