Constructed in the early 1970’s, the Pine Valley Middle School was designed as a concrete block, bunker like, pod school that provided a warren-like arrangement of classrooms—many without natural light. Circulation was awful forcing students to access nearly half the classrooms by passing through other spaces. By removing the poorly placed cafeteria, stage, band room and undersized library, a new centralized courtyard is created that provides abundant daylight to the previously nested classrooms, and affords multiple school entries. New buildings replace the previously undersized and poorly located uses including library, art rooms, locker rooms (now adjacent to the gymnasium) and visual/performing arts spaces.
